Forty years ago, Acoustic Energy shook up the world of compact monitors with the original AE1 — a speaker that defied expectations by offering clarity, punch, and control in a deceptively small cabinet.  As a tribute to that ground-breaking legacy, the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition has now arrived, blending timeless design with modern engineering that respects the character of the original.

Under the hood, the Anniversary Edition is far from a simple reissue. Acoustic Energy reconstructed every major component from the ground up. The tweeter now features a larger 29 mm voice coil (up from 25 mm), giving it greater power-handling and lower distortion — but still cooled and damped with ferrofluid, just like in the original. The 125 mm woofer has also been re-engineered with an anodised ceramic-aluminium cone and an aluminium shorting ring in its motor structure to reduce distortion and improve efficiency.

The cabinet remains compact — matching the original dimensions — but it’s been upgraded with Acoustic Energy’s RSC™ constrained-layer material, which adds rigidity without changing the external size. The twin front ports have also been re-tooled with a flared internal design to reduce distortion and improve bass extension. A low-order crossover, inspired by the classic “Signature” model, delivers a warm, natural midrange, dynamic punch, and a forgiving top end — carefully tuned for a home environment rather than strictly studio duties.

Presented in premium finishes — either high-gloss black or walnut veneer — the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition has already earned accolades, including an Editor’s Choice Award from The Ear. Priced at £1,499 per pair, it offers both a piece of hi-fi history and a genuinely re-engineered modern monitor, making it an enticing pick for audiophiles who want that vintage spirit with contemporary performance.

  • AVForums — “They did not sound like small speakers but rather sounded much bigger with a surprising bass response. The speakers disappeared … detailed and smooth … they have a premium feel also.”
  • Hi‑Fi Choice — “Such spatiality, plus the sheer speed and grip … this little loudspeaker just wants to make music magic.”
